Lake Como is a short train ride away from Milan, approx 1 hour. It’s well worth it. It is said that George Clooney has a house there. My wife was hoping to bump into him.
The Lake Como Mountain Railway (Funicolare Como-Brunate and Lighthouse Voltiano) takes passengers from Pazza de Gasperi, near the lake in Como up to Brunate, where you can enjoy the views over the Lake Como area. It climbs 715 meters or 2,354 feet!!! Takes 7 minutes. It’s basically a cable car on rails.
There are a couple of walks when you get to the top. One leads to a lighthouse, the Faro Voltiano in the hamlet San Maurizio apparently during certain times of the year you can access this by bus. The lighthouse was built in 1927. You can climb the stairs to the top of this if you still have enough energy left.
On another route, just a few minutes walk away, you arrive at the Pissarottino Fountain with panoramic views over Lake Como and Monte Rosa.
From the top at Brunate you can also walk back down to Como, via 2 paths: One follows the route of funicular mountain railway, and the other, passes through the woods passing by the Eremo S. Donato, an ex 15th century Convent. Mountain climbing is beyond us but great for the more adventurous and fitter traveller.
